My name is Amiria and I'm currently working as the Chief Flying Instructor for a little old club at Whenuapai.
I started my flying at Ardmore Flying School after a good push out the door from my Aunty after I completed high school. A 'no-fuss' lady my Aunty is who promptly had me sitting in front of a careers advisor asking me what was I doing with my life. In a few weeks I was signed up for a Diploma in Aviation commencing February 2003.
By 2005 I had completed a PPL, CPL and MEIR and quite frankly was after a bit of break from study and went to earn some real money. Of course with very little actual pilot in command time I didn't even try the airlines and found myself at a car rental. Not spectacular I know but it paid the bills and I can have a little fun for the first time in my 20's . . .

I went back in 2006 to complete my C Category Instructors rating and found myself in Dunedin passing a B Cat a few years later. Had my first taste of aero club environments down there with Otago Aero Club and was hooked from then on. And here I am today, that is 21st June 2015 just nudging 2000hrs flight time - most of it flight instructor time.

Amiria has a conversation with a student

I asked a student one day how his studies were coming along. He responded nonchalantly with a "meh, its hard work trying to sit down and read a book, I tend to google a lot of the pilot theory online. If only it was all in one place!" Thats how it started. This particular student is also a successful and extremely good businessman, we immediately put our heads together and came up with A Flying Start!

Why a blog?

I always thought that there was more to flight instructing than merely monkey see monkey do and have always pushed that I do not teach people how to fly - I teach people how to be a pilot. That comes with all the right attitudes, decision making processes and even how to troubleshoot a situation in flight and react appropriately. Anyway I thought I might share my ideas and they are just that - my ideas from my personal experience. Comment as you wish but don't be too judgmental - I take feedback well.
